ATLANTA, Ga. (WALB) - On December 3, 1936, the writer of the beloved Broadway musical “Parade” was born in Georgia.

While “Parade” may be his most famous work right now, Alfred Uhry has earned a Pulitzer Prize, an Academy Award and several Tony Awards for his many productions.

His first big success was “Driving Miss Daisy,” a show set in Atlanta before, during and after the Civil Rights Movement. The show follows Miss Daisy, an elderly Jewish woman, and her driver, Hoke Colburn, a Black man.

“Parade” debuted in 1998 and was revived on Broadway in 2023, starring Ben Platt. The story is about Leo Frank, a Jewish man who was convicted of murdering a young girl in Atlanta. The 2023 production won the Tony Awards for Best Musical Revival and Best Direction of a Musical.

Uhry’s most acclaimed productions are rooted in his experience as a Jewish man growing up in Georgia. Through his work as a playwright, he was able to bring these stories to life and help a whole population of people feel seen.
