Description
DOUGLAS, Ga. (WALB) - A person is in custody following a high-speed chase that ended in Coffee County.
According to the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), a deputy tried to initiate a traffic stop after seeing a vehicle driving without headlights after dark. The driver initially complied, but a passenger got out of the vehicle and fled on foot.
The driver then accelerated, which initiated a high-speed chase.
The chase continued on Highway 221, crossing over to Highway 32 into Nicholls before the suspect turned and drove back to the Douglas city limits, according to CCSO.
Deputies used several tactics, including spike strips, to try to end the pursuit, but those efforts were unsuccessful.
Then, a controlled, low-speed PIT maneuver was performed, which successfully brought the chase to a safe end without incident.
CCSO said the driver was taken to the Coffee Regional Medical Center for evaluation.
Additional information, such as potential charges, will be released once the suspect is formally booked into the Coffee County Pre-Trial Detention Center.
