Description

PULASKI COUNTY, Mo. (KRCG) — A grand jury indicted a former substitute teacher on several charges for the rape, sodomy, and sexual trafficking of a student.

Carissa Smith was charged with two counts of sexual trafficking of a child under the age of 18, nine counts of statutory rape, two counts of statutory sodomy, three counts of sexual contact with a student, one count of patronizing prostitution – 14 years and younger, and two counts of hindering prosecution of a felony.

Court documents state that Smith was a teacher in the Dixon R-I School District in Pulaski County, Missouri.

Documents allege that two juvenile victims spoke to deputies at Kid’s Harbor.

They reported that they had sex with Smith, in return for money, alcohol, and marijuana.

One of the victims also said that a third juvenile had sex with Smith, but the court documents did not specify that they had spoken with law enforcement.

Smith started working for Dixon Middle School as a regular substitute in August 2022.

She moved to Dixon High School as a paraprofessional for the 2023-2024.

In August of 2024, Smith quit her position.

A warrant was issued for her arrest on November 12, but the Pulaski County Jail’s online jail records do not show that she was in custody.

The superintendent of Dixon R-I sent a letter to parents about the arrest on Wednesday.

Travis Bohrer said in the letter that they knew of the allegations earlier, but could not share due to the law enforcement investigation.

He said the district worked with the Missouri Children's Division and law enforcement.

They also were in contact with affected families.

He ended the letter by asking families with questions to contact him at 573-759-7163, ext. 1, the Missouri Children's Division at 1-800-392-3738, or Pulaski County Sheriff's Department Detective Chance Shoecraft at 573-774-6196, ext. 438.
