Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - South Georgians took advantage of the holiday and flocked to stores like Lowes, Tractor Supply, and Home Depot to prepare for the possibility of snow and ice.
“We are probably going to shut it down early, get to the house, and just get ready. We will probably be off Wednesday as well,” said Albany resident, Will Worn.
Most residents tell WALB they aren’t too worried about the storm itself, but they are nervous about the road conditions.
While widespread ice isn’t expected — be cautious and go slow if you have to drive during the snow.
Since below-freezing temperatures are expected, experts warn residents to properly insulate their pipes and thoroughly wrap any outdoor pipes that are exposed.
“If all else fails, and you don’t have anything left, turn your faucets on and let them run a bit. Running water won’t freeze so that’s a helpful thing to do,” said Charles White, General Manager of Ace Hardware.
Aside from pipe wrap and foam insulation, shoppers continually reached for portable heaters. Should the power go out, electric heaters won’t work, but heaters powered by gas will do the trick.
“There’s always safety things with kerosene and propane, obviously. The ones we stock are made for indoor/outdoor use. If you follow the safety instructions, you should be good,” continued White.
Many shoppers came looking for rock salt but left disappointed when none was in stock. Workers tell WALB that it’s extremely hard to find rock salt anywhere south of Atlanta.
There are plenty of alternatives for residents who want to keep their driveway from freezing. Pool salt, sand, and even kitty litter are acceptable substitutions.
