ALBANY, Ga. — Eight student-athletes from three South Georgia schools signed college scholarships Thursday, continuing their athletic careers at the next level.
Sherwood Christian senior Dallas Williams signed with Point University to play football. Williams played eight-man football for the Eagles, a path he initially found unfamiliar.
“At first, I was kind of anxious because I didn’t know anything about eight-man football,” Williams said. “But once I got there and I learned how godly they were and how they coached and taught and they were caring and cared for me, I lean more to this as a great opportunity.”
Williams said his family kept him focused on academics throughout his high school career.
“Kind of strict when it comes to grades. My mom, she cares about football, but not as much as she cares about grades,” Williams said. “As long as my grades are up, she thinks I can do anything in the world.”
Softball player overcomes injury
Berrien senior Lathan Tucker signed with Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College to play softball after recovering from a complete knee tear. Doctors told Tucker she would not play softball again.
“This time last year, I didn’t think I’d ever play softball again. I had doctors telling me I would not be touching a softball the rest of my life,” Tucker said. “And it really just shows that what God can do and I fully put my trust in him.”
Tucker will room with Cook High senior Annaleigh Weaver, who signed with ABAC last week. Tucker’s high school coach previously played baseball at ABAC.
“I feel like home. Second home. Home away from home. Coach Reed, he’s great. Love him the best. Love the whole team,” Tucker said.
Five Trojans sign with colleges
Dougherty Comprehensive held a signing ceremony for five Trojans. Four players will attend Albany State University: Khalil Jones, Deshaun Malone, Jayden Owens and Jannard Walker. All were recruited by new Albany State head coach David Bowser.
Coach Uyl Joyner said the four Albany State signees are strong students who will qualify for Hope Scholarships.
“All our kids right here are going to be Hope Scholarship guys. And so they’re good students. They’re dual enrollment guys,” Joyner said.
Braylon Bango signed with Clayton State University.
“Because the coaching staff, they always been with me throughout the whole recruiting process. They’ve been showing love. They show love at home. Nice campus,” Bango said. “I’m just ready to go work and show everybody where I belong.”
