FORT STEWART, Ga. (TNND) — Several soldiers at Fort Stewart in Georgia are being called heroes after they quickly tackled a fellow soldier who opened fire on base Wednesday, injuring five.

"Soldiers in the area that witnessed the shooting immediately and without hesitation tackled the soldier, subdued him. That allowed law enforcement to then take him into custody,” Brig. Gen. John Lubas, the 3rd Infantry Division and Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield commander, said during a news conference.

The five soldiers are being treated but are stable and expected to recover, Brig Gen. John Lubas added.

Lubas identified 28-year-old Quornelius Radford as the man who opened fire with a personal handgun at Fort Stewart. Radford is alive and is being held in pretrial custody as he waits for "a charging decision by the Office of the Special Trial Counsel."

Military investigators will be looking into how Radford managed to bring his personal gun onto the Army base and his motive.

Lubas said that he is still "very confident in the security of this installation," and they will "have to determine how he was able to get a handgun to his place of duty."

Radford is an automated logistics sergeant with the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team.

A law enforcement official told CNN that the suspect had been previously arrested in May during a traffic stop for driving under the influence. According to officials, Radford's chain of command was unaware of the DUI arrest.

“I do believe he was arrested locally for a DUI. That was unknown to his chain of command until the event occurred and we and we started looking into the law enforcement databases,” Lubas said.

Law enforcement responded to the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team complex shortly before 11 a.m., according to officials. The shooter was arrested at 11:35 a.m.

After about an hour, the lockdown was lifted and vehicles were able to move through the normal security checkpoint.

President Donald Trump called the shooter a "horrible person" when speaking to reporters at the White House.
