SOUTH GEORGIA (WALB) – Several South Georgia counties are under flood watches, causing disruptions to local high school football games.

Flood watches have been issued for the following counties:

• Atkinson
• Coffee
• Crisp
• Dooly
• Wilcox

The watch is in effect from 5 p.m. EDT Friday through Friday evening.

A frontal boundary positioned across southeastern Georgia is expected to develop widespread thunderstorms and slow-moving, heavy downpours late this afternoon and into the evening. The risk for flooding and potential flash flooding will increase during this time, especially in urban and flood-prone areas. Rainfall amounts of 1–2 inches are expected, with localized totals of 3–4 inches possible in heavier downpours.

Flash Flood Watches are also in effect for Ben Hill, Berrien, Cook, Dougherty, Irwin, Lee, Tift, Turner, and Worth counties from 8 a.m. Friday through late Saturday night.

Impacts:

Excessive runoff may cause flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying or flood-prone areas. Flooding may also occur in poor drainage and urban locations.

Heavy rainfall from slow-moving thunderstorms could produce widespread totals of 1–3 inches, with localized amounts over 5 inches where storms stall. This could lead to flash flooding in small rivers, creeks, and streams, as well as in urban areas.

High School Football Schedule Changes:

• Bradwell Institute vs. Westover – Cancelled
• Tiftarea Academy vs. Turner County – Cancelled
• STEM Charter vs. SCAA – Cancelled
