Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) -
OVERVIEW- This week will feature the most impactful weather we have had in months. A strong line of potentially severe thunderstorms roll through Sunday afternoon, bringing the coldest air of the season that doesn’t relent through the rest of the upcoming week. Multiple Hard Freezes are likely next week.
TONIGHT/SUNDAY- Cloudy with a stray light shower possible. Lows are well above freezing in the upper 40s. Sunday will have highs in the low 70s with cloudy skies. A line of potentially severe storms move into the western counties first in the early afternoon (around 2pm), and make their way into Albany by 4pm. The line will gradually weaken and begin to fragment at around sunset, impacting the eastern counties by 6pm. Showers will linger behind the main line of storms into the late evening.
The severe threat will be the highest in the afternoon hours, before gradually declining through the evening. The main timeframe for severe weather appears to be 2-9pm. The main threat is damaging straight line winds (15% chance for the western 2/3 of SGA), and a secondary isolated tornado threat embedded within the line of storms (5% chance mostly for areas within the Flint River Valley). Have a way to receive weather updates from us tomorrow after lunch time into your evening hours.
Rain totals will be from be around an inch, with some local areas potentially seeing more or less. The NW counties Sunday night will see freezing temperatures, so it is entirely possible for some patches of ice Monday morning, so be cautious driving and walking early in the morning.
FRIGID WORK WEEK- This will easily be the coldest week of the season so far. Monday afternoon highs will barely scrape into the 40s before bottoming out in the teens and low 20s with wind chills potentially reaching single digits overnight. We appear to stay below 50 degrees for the rest of the work week in the afternoon with overnight lows well below freezing. Expect a Hard Freeze Monday and Tuesday night with the potential for even more on the back end of the work week.
Protect the 4 P’s as we end January: Bundle up and limit your time outside, bring in the pets and plants, and drip the pipes. Rain looks to stay away through the work week.
