WASHINGTON (7News) — U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen arrived at Dulles International Airport Wednesday morning to travel to El Salvador, hoping to discuss the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland man mistakenly deported and currently held in a notorious Salvadoran prison.

Sen. Van Hollen said he is fighting to bring Abrego Garcia home.

"I told Mr. Abrego Garcia's family that I would do everything I could to bring him home," he told 7News Wednesday.

“Following his abduction and unlawful deportation, U.S. federal courts have ordered the safe return of my constituent Kilmar Abrego Garcia to the United States," Sen. Van Hollen said in a statement. "It should be a priority of the U.S. government to secure his safe release, which is why tomorrow I am traveling to El Salvador. My hope is to visit Kilmar and check on his well-being and to hold constructive conversations with government officials around his release. We must urgently continue working to return Kilmar safely home to Maryland.”

Van Hollen's visit comes after President Donald Trump and President Nayib Bukele met at the White House and said they didn't intend to bring Abrego Garcia back to the United States.

Trump administration officials emphasized that Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was sent to a notorious gang prison in El Salvador, was a citizen of that country and that the U.S. has no say in his future. And Bukele, who has been a vital partner for the Trump administration in its deportation efforts, said, “Of course, I’m not going to release him back to U.S. soil."

“The question is preposterous,” Bukele said. “I don't have the power to return him to the United States.”

Van Hollen spoke on CNN Tuesday evening, advocating on behalf of Abrego Garcia.

"The President could, of course, facilitate his return. After all, the United States is paying El Salvador money for this prison and of course, the president of Salvador can release him," Van Hollen said.
