TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - They say when tragedy strikes and things get tough, turn to the helpers.
The helpers were on full display on Thursday night at Dick Howser Stadium, as 1,100 hamburgers and hot dogs given out to Florida State University students after two men were killed and multiple others injured following a Thursday shooting. They came for Dick Howser for comfort, to get a hot meal.
“When you say Florida State, it’s one Florida State,” athletic director Michael Alford said. “We have that unconquered spirit.”
An unconquered spirit and unwavering support in the darkest of times.
“It’s a special place, special community. We’re going to come through this, and we’re going to support each other through it,” Alford said.
600 hot dogs. 500 hamburgers - a chance for a little normalcy, when nothing was normal about Thursday.
“There’s a lot of things going on, a lot of students to account for,” Florida State student Amanda Golson said. “It’s little things like this that help us a little bit and give back the way they can.”
“All day long, we were working with campus. They said ‘do you feel like you could reach out and help?’” Alford said. “I said, ‘let me figure it out.’ I called our partner here in Legends, at the baseball stadium, and they immediately jumped to it.”
A hot meal when the Seminole community needed it most.
“At the end of the day, everyone looks out for each other,” Golson said. “It’s little things like this that really show.”
“It’s such a special community on campus,” Alford added. “It is family. We’re going to do everything we can do take care of them.”
All athletic home events are cancelled at Florida State through Sunday.
