ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) -Albany police are working to locate a driver who reportedly ran from the scene of a crash that sent one person to the hospital Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Albany Police Department, a Toyota Avalon was traveling southbound on Liberty Expressway when it crossed through the median and collided head-on with a white Ford F-150.
After the crash, the driver of the Avalon allegedly got out of the vehicle and ran from the scene. Witnesses told police that they saw the suspect get picked up later down the expressway.
“I watched him run across the median and the opposite side of the road. I thought he was just in shock,” one Facebook user commented under WALB’s coverage of the crash. “Wish I would have known what he was doing. They know who he is he left his girlfriend at the scene. Prayers for everyone involved.”
The driver of the F-150 was seriously injured and remains hospitalized but is expected to recover, according to police.
In Georgia, leaving the scene of a crash that causes serious injury or death is a felony and can carry a prison sentence of one to five years.
Albany Police Chief Michael Persley said he wants to warn people against running away after an accident.
“I still believe that people have a conscience, and if you know that you seriously hurt someone, or possibly caused someone to lose their life and you have to live with that for the rest of your life-don’t leave. Just go ahead and be accountable for what’s to come,” Persley said.
He also urged drivers to remain alert and avoid distractions behind the wheel.
“When we do see these things, this is where we just have to continue to urge drivers to use caution,” Persley said. “Everyone needs to be a defensive driver, because when you just focus on driving for yourself, you get distracted. Then you can intentionally harm someone else.”
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the Albany Police Department.
