SEATTLE (KOMO) — A flight carrying dozens of cats and dogs arrived at Boeing Field in Seattle Sunday afternoon in an effort to help relieve pressure on overcrowded shelters dealing with the impacts of wildfires around Los Angeles.

Seattle Humane will take 45 of the animals, placing them in temporary shelters and preparing them for adoption to homes in western Washington.

"We’ll get them fed, tucked in for the night and tomorrow we’ll get them medical exams and get to know them," said Alison Waszmer, the director of animal care at Seattle Humane. “We were able to say ‘how can we help’, and everybody jumped into action and here we are.”

The animals are coming from Paws For Life K9 Rescue in Mission Hills with the help of Wings of Rescue.

“The shelters and the rescues down there are already bursting at the seams before these fires happened," said Ashley Georgia, the president of The Pittie Project PNW.

The Pittie Project PNW, based in Bellingham, received six dogs on Sunday night's flight.

"They’re in desperate need of getting dogs out so they can make room for the displaced dogs coming in," said Georgia. “When they come in, we allow them to decompress. We give them time to relax before we start assessing them.”

Seattle Humane said they did a similar rescue flight during the Maui wildfires. The group also assisted with taking in shelter pets on the East Coast during Hurricane Ian.

The pets are expected to be available for adoption starting Tuesday, Jan. 14, Seattle Humane said.
