OCILLA, Ga. (WALB) - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirms it has been requested by Ocilla Police Department to assist in a deadly shooting investigation that occurred near the Intersection of East 10th Street and North McKinley Street in Ocilla.

According to the GBI, police located several victims, including Marquavious Westbrook, with suspected gunshot wounds. The victims were taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Westbrook was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Family members of the injured tell us the shooting happened at a party.

Family Speaks Out

Wendy Fleming, the aunt of Marquavious Da’shawn Westbrook shared memories of her nephew:

“I’m just, Still, I’m still in shock. I just don’t know what to think. It’s just, you know, he’s just the innocent bystander, you know, just out trying to have a good time and this is what happened. He was just a very bright kid, he was athletic. He was he was our gentle giant. I mean, very respectful, um, every time you’ve seen him. He just always had a smile on his face and he just just overall good kids.”

She also had a message for the community:

“Put the guns down. I don’t, I don’t know where all this hate is coming from. It’s just so evil. I mean, taking loved ones from their family, it has nothing to do with what’s going on. I mean, I just don’t understand it.”

Fleming says the family is taking things one step at a time:

“They’re hanging in there. It’s really hard on this family right now. Just trying to take it step by step. I mean, it’s something they’ve never been through before and just ask that everybody keep them in their prayers. As we move forward.”

Another Victim Fighting for Life

One mother, Tequesta Crumedy, says her son was also shot during the incident.

She identifies him as Damonee Crumedy, 20, who is currently in critical condition in the ICU at Atrium Health Navicent Medical Center.

Crumedy states, “seeing my son laying there really just did something to me like all this senseless shooting is stupid...my son is in critical condition please pray for him he’s a fighter....Praying for the young man family that lost his life.”

She is asking for continued prayers as her son fights to recover. A GoFundMe is expected to be set up.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Authorities have not released information about any suspects at this time.
