EDMOND, OK (KOKH) — University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos head coach Adam Dorrel was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The incident happened on April 3, just after 5 p.m., when officers responded to reports of a reckless driver near Smiling Hill Boulevard and S. Bryant Avenue.

According to an Edmond Police Department report, a witness saw a blue Ford Bronco driving erratically and hitting a curb.

Officers later found the vehicle parked in the roadway and identified the driver as Adam Dorrel. Police noted that Dorrel had slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and an odor of alcohol.

Despite denying alcohol consumption, Dorrel later admitted to consuming alcohol.

He also refused to complete standard field sobriety tests and resisted exiting the vehicle, according to the report. Officers helped him out of the car and noted he was unsteady on his feet.

Dorrel was arrested for DUI at 5:29 pm, and his vehicle was impounded.

Police said a ceramic Starbucks mug containing whiskey was found in the car.

According to the report, Dorrel was taken to the Edmond City Jail, where he refused breath and blood tests and requested a lawyer.

The University of Central Oklahoma released the following statement:

We are evaluating options to hold Coach Dorrel accountable in this situation. His actions are not consistent with the standards and expectations we have for members of the Broncho community. He has expressed regret and is taking responsibility for his actions, and we are assisting him with getting the help he needs. For the time being, Associate Head Coach James Curlee will lead the football program.

Body and dash cam video have been released, as well as 911 calls.
