Description
DOUGLAS, Ga. (WALB) - The Douglas Police Department (DPD) issued a warning to the community amidst “disturbing scam” targeting the Hispanic community.
Police say that scammers are reaching out to victims through social media and initiating what seems like a friendly or romantic conversation. After building trust, the scammers record or manipulate video chats. They then alter these videos using technology to make it appear as though the victim is engaged in a sexual act with a minor.
These scammers are reportedly then using this fake content to extort the victim. Police say that the scammers are demanding money and threatening to release the video to friends, family or the public.
Douglas Police want the public to know that this is a scam. They advise victims to not send money, save all the messages and report the scam immediately to your local law enforcement agency.
