WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump said Thursday he would pull the nomination of Ed Martin Jr. as the top federal prosecutor for the nation's capital after he wasn't getting key Republican support in the Senate.
"He wasn't getting the support," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. "I'm very disappointed in that. Hopefully, we can bring him into, whether it's DOJ or whatever, in some capacity."
Two days before, Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., said he could not support Martin for the job after he defended rioters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
"I have no tolerance for anybody who entered the building on Jan. 6," Tillis said on Tuesday. "We have to be very, very clear that what happened on January 6 was wrong. It wasn't, it was not prompted or created by other people to put those people in trouble. They made a stupid decision and they disgraced the United States by absolutely destroying the Capitol, and I can't have any patience for them."
Trump added that a replacement would be announced "over the next two days."
Martin responded to the news on social media with a doctored image of himself dressed in papal garments with the words, "Plot twist."
After Trump was sworn into office on Jan. 20, Martin was appointed acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. His temporary appointment is set to expire on May 20.
On the other hand, Martin also had some prominent supporters, including Elon Musk, Charlie Kirk and Donald Trump Jr, who touted his record of fighting for conservative causes and his efforts to reduce violent crime in Washington.
Martin practiced law in Missouri but never worked as a prosecutor or tried a case before Trump appointed him in January. Martin chaired the Missouri Republican Party before becoming president of conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly’s Eagle Forum in April 2013. He co-authored a book about Trump with Schlafly, who died in 2016.
