Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Planning and preparation can help ensure a safe and fun boating trip, according to Eric White with the Georgia department of Natural Resources, Law Enforcement Division.
In Georgia, boaters must carry several safety items with them in the event of an emergency.
Some of these items include:
- A coast guard approved life vest or flotation device for each passenger
- A B-1 fire extinguisher
- A horn, whistle or bell
- Daytime visual distress signals
- Nighttime visual distress signals

Routine maintenance and operational checks are also highly recommended. Simple things like checking the functionality of equipment like radios, engines, trolling motors, navigational lights and anchors can make for a easy day on the water.
