ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A South Fulton police officer who was critically injured during a shootout with a suspect on Friday is recovering at the hospital.
Lt. Charles Cook is in the ICU after surgery, according to the police department. His family was able to visit him on Friday night.

Cook was one of two officers shot at a Fulton County motel. He was called to assist a Fulton County police officer after someone reported a suspicious person at the Budgetel Inn and Suites off Fulton Industrial Boulevard.

Law enforcement said the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Rashan Jarvis Cofield of Atlanta, had an active warrant out for his arrest. As officers confirmed his identity and tried to take him into custody, Cofield ran away and shot at them, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).
Cook was hit by three bullets, and Fulton County Police Department Officer Zahir Muid chased the suspect into the motel’s parking lot. More gunfire was exchanged, and Muid was shot as well, the GBI said.

Muid, who was taken to the hospital and has since been released, is credited with saving Cook’s life by quickly applying a tourniquet.
Police said the suspect died in the encounter. A witness told Atlanta News First that the suspect shot himself in the head, but officers have not confirmed Cofield’s cause of death.
