TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Florida State University announced Saturday that classes will resume Monday, four days after a student allegedly opened fire on campus.
The shooting left two dead and six injured. Hundreds turned out to a university-led vigil Friday evening to grieve.
The next day, FSU President Richard McCullough announced that campus activities would resume Monday, but faculty would be mindful to offer students flexibility and support.
“I know it won’t feel like a normal week. It’s the last one before finals, and many of you are still processing what happened,” his statement said. “Please take care of yourself. If you need time or support, reach out.”
But the announcement spurred criticism from many students, including the FSU College Democrats.
“We were given a week off when the university got a few inches of snow - now we’re expected to go back to class days after a mass shooting,” a press release from the group said.
Hours after the backlash, the university shared a video of McCullough saying he understands not all students may be ready to return. He urged them to speak with their instructors about how to move forward, saying that they will be accommodating.
As we prepare to resume classes and business operations, we understand that some of you may not be ready to return. We will be flexible. If you need time, or support, please reach out to one of the many services we have available. We are here to help. pic.twitter.com/WObeY6oNY4
