Description

OREM, Utah (TNND) — It has been nearly a week since the assassination of political activist Charlie Kirk and investigators are still working to learn more about the murder and motives of the 22-year-old Utah man who allegedly shot him.

The suspect, Tyler Robinson, who is set to appear in court on Tuesday, is currently being held without bail at the Utah County Jail on charges of aggravated murder, discharge of a firearm, and obstruction of justice. At this time, it is unclear if Robinson will only be charged in Utah or prosecuted federally as well.

Utah Attorney General Derek Brown has not announced if authorities would pursue the death penalty. President Donald Trump and Utah Gov. Spencer Cox have been vocal about their support for it.

Officials with the Utah County Sheriff's Office said he was placed in the special housing unit until he could be cleared by medical staff and moved to the "appropriate housing for the charges." They said the unit has around-the-clock physical supervision.

Kirk was shot in the neck on Wednesday in what police called a "targeted attack" as he allegedly discussed transgender shooters with a crowd at Utah Valley University in Orem. He co-founded the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA and was a close ally of Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

Graphic videos showed stunned attendees running away and screaming as Kirk reached up to touch his neck while blood gushed from the left side.

What we know so far:

Suspect not cooperating with authorities

Gov. Cox shared over the weekend that Robinson is not cooperating with officials, but pointed out that he had left-leaning political ideologies and disliked Kirk for his conservative views.

“Clearly a leftist ideology," Cox said during an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“That information comes from the people around him, his family members and friends,” Cox said during a separate interview on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

The governor pointed to gaming and "dark internet" culture as potential factors for radicalizing him.

Clearly there was a lot of gaming going on,” Cox said on NBC. “Friends have confirmed that there was kind of that deep, dark internet, the Reddit culture, and these other dark places of the internet where this person was going deep. You saw that on the casings the meme-ification that is happening in our society today.

According to the FBI, a Mauser bolt-action riflewas recovered in the woods wrapped in a towel near the scene with engravings on several of the casings. The messages appear to blend anti-fascist sentiments with internet meme culture.

One said, "Hey, fascist! Catch!" with an up arrow, a right arrow and three down arrows, a second with the writing, "Oh bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao," and the third saying, "If you read this, you are gay LMAO."

An inscription on the fired casing said: "Notices, bulges, OWO, What's this?"

The 'up arrow symbol, right arrow, and three down arrow symbols' have been linked to a popular code in the game Helldivers 2. 'Notices, bulges OWO. What's this?' is a meme typically used to "make fun of furry roleplaying, including the language and typing quirks stereotypically attributed to roleplayers and furries," according to the website "Know Your Meme." 'Bella Ciao' is an antifascist anthem popular with video game players.

FBI Director Kash Patel told "Fox & Friends" Monday morning that DNA from the towel wrapped around the gun and DNA from a screwdriver found on the roof were "positively processed for the suspect in custody."

The firearm is still being analyzed by Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) experts in Maryland, Patel added.

Cox also confirmed the recent news that the suspect’s partner was transgender, which some politicians have pointed to as a possible motive that Robinson was targeting Kirk for his anti-trans views. Authorities have not said whether or not this information is relevant to the investigation.

“The roommate was a romantic partner, a male transitioning to female,” Cox said. “I can say that he has been incredibly cooperative, this partner has been very cooperative, had no idea that this was happening.”

Discord, a social networking platform, said in a statement Friday that there was “no evidence that the suspect planned this incident or promoted violence on Discord.”

“The messages referenced in recent reporting about planning details do not appear to be Discord messages,” the company added.

The 33-hour manhunt

Patel said on Friday that Robinson was taken into custody 33 hours after the deadly shooting on Sept. 10.

"This is what happens when you let good cops be cops. The FBI and our partners are proud to stand here today together to bring justice to the family of Charlie Kirk and honor his memory," Patel stated during a news conference.

Robinson allegedly arrived on campus at 8:10 a.m. in a grey Dodge Challenger.

At 12:23 p.m., Kirk was fatally shot and surveillance footage showed Robinson standing up suddenly and running north until he got to the edge of the roof, jumped down, and ran into the woods.

Robert Bohls, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Salt Lake City field office, told reporters on Thursday that footwear impressions, a palm print, and forearm imprints found at the scene would be analyzed by the FBI.

On Sept. 11, one of Robinson's family members reportedly reached out to a friend and implied Robinson "committed the incident," the affidavit states.

The friend contacted the Washington County Sheriff's Office, who relayed the information to the Utah County Sheriff's Office, Utah Valley University scene investigators, and the FBI.

On the morning of Sept. 12, investigators made contact with Robinson and took him into custody, who was wearing clothing consistent with what was seen on surveillance footage.

"We got him," Gov. Cox said on Friday when announcing Robinson was in custody.

The governor told reporters that it is believed Robinson acted alone in the shooting, "but the investigation is ongoing."
