ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - The Dougherty County Library has partnered up with Helping Mamas nonprofit to support local families with the supplies they need most.
Every first Wednesday of the month at the Central and Tallulah Massey library branches, baby diapers and feminine hygiene products are given away for free.
Brittney Rood, manager at the Dougherty County Library, said the monthly giveaway helps people in the community struggling with everyday costs.
“Times are hard for a lot of us right now,” said Rood. “I think this is one last expensive thing the community has to worry about.”
In 2024, 46% of U.S. families with children under four years old reported diaper insecurity. In nearly half of those families, babies didn’t have enough diapers.
The cost of feminine hygiene products has also gone up. In 2024, the average price of sanitary pads jumped up 41% and tampons up 36%.
Krista Dixon, Administrative Secretary of the Dougherty County Library System, said she is proud of the work they’ve done so far.
“As a mom, knowing I can tell my friends in the community, ‘hey come on in the first Wednesday of each month. I want to come and get diapers,’ it’s a very uplifting feeling,” she said.
On average, about 50 people come through for supplies each month, organizers said. For many, this monthly support isn’t just helpful, it’s essential.
The next giveaway will be held on Sept. 3. Anybody in need is encouraged to stop by both locations.
Dougherty County Library’s Central Branch is located at 300 Pine Avenue. The Tallulah Massey branch is located at 2004 Stratford Drive. For their hours, click here.
