LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - Lowndes County Fire Rescue (LCFR) urges residents to stay safe in the kitchen as the thanksgiving holiday approaches.
Thanksgiving is the leading day for home kitchen fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Top safety kitchen tips includes:
- Stay in the kitchen while cooking, unattended cooking is the leading cause of kitchen fires
- Keep things such as gloves and oven mittens away from the stovetop
- Fry turkeys outdoors on level ground, away from buildings, and only when thawed out completely
- Test smoke alarms and keep a fire extinguisher nearby
- If a fire breaks out, get out and call 911
LCFR emphasizes that simple precautions can make a difference between a safe celebration and a disaster.
