WASHINGTON (TNND) — Lawmakers are expressing mixed reactions to President Trump's decision to launch an attack on Iran.
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham praised the move, stating on social media that it was the "right call" and that the Iranian regime "deserved it."
"Good. This was the right call. The regime deserves it. Well done, President @realDonaldTrump. To my fellow citizens: We have the best Air Force in the world. It makes me so proud. Fly, Fight, Win," Graham wrote.
Several other Republicans have echoed similar sentiments online, including Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La.
Johnson said leaders in Congress were "aware of the urgency" of the situation.
Leaders in Congress were aware of the urgency of this situation and the Commander-in-Chief evaluated that the imminent danger outweighed the time it would take for Congress to act. The world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism, which chants “Death to America,” simply could not be allowed the opportunity to obtain and use nuclear weapons," Johnson wrote.
Johnson said Trump respects the Article I power of Congress and that the strikes on Iran follow the history of similar military actions of both Democratic and Republican presidents.
Democratic Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman also took to social media, denouncing Iran as "the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism."
"As I’ve long maintained, this was the correct move by @POTUS. Iran is the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism and cannot have nuclear capabilities. I’m grateful for and salute the finest military in the world," Fetterman wrote.
In contrast, Congressman Jim Himes, D-Conn., condemned the attack, writing, "Donald Trump's decision to launch direct military action against Iran without Congressional approval is a clear violation of the Constitution, which grants the power to declare war explicitly to Congress."
Republican Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie criticized the decision as "not constitutional."
Massie, who has frequently opposed the president, co-sponsored a resolution earlier this month aimed at preventing military action in Iran without congressional approval.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., is now calling for Trump's impeachment, while Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., reacted to the strikes at an event in Oklahoma, calling them "grossly unconstitutional.
Members of Congress from both parties had previously urged President Trump to seek congressional approval before any military action against Iran's nuclear facilities.
