ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Kids at “Balancing the Equation’s STEM Lab” in Albany are learning a valuable lesson this holiday season: decorating does not have to break the bank.

Families recently rotated through hands-on stations in the lab— turning simple, everyday materials turned into experiments and decorations.

“This is a part of STEM as well, creativity, flexibility, having the kids being able to choose how they want to express themselves,” said Tiffany, Balancing the Equation’s Founder.

Using heat, crayons inside a clear ornament can bring out vibrant colors.

“It’s a safe experiment. Use a heat flame to melt the crayons inside of the ornaments just to make sure they stick. If you don’t have [a] heat tool, you can also use a hand blow dryer...That takes about 2-3 minutes.”

Snowflake glitter, combined with water, oil, and a fizz tablet, can create bubbles that push the colored water through the oil, making a simple, safe lava-lamp effect kids can recreate at home.
