PLAINS, Ga. (WALB) — What began as informal musical visits grew into an annual birthday tradition, bringing together musicians, celebrities, and people from around the world to celebrate former President Jimmy Carter and raise money for causes close to his heart.

Tonight, that tradition continues.

Pianist David Osborne is returning to Plains to celebrate what would have been President Carter’s 102nd birthday with a free community concert at 7 p.m. at Maranatha Baptist Church.

Known widely as the “pianist to the presidents,” Osborne first met Carter in the late 1980s at an Orlando book signing after handing the former president a record album with his phone number on it. That impromptu gift led to an invitation to play for Sunday service at Maranatha Baptist Church, where Carter taught Sunday school for decades.

Over nearly 40 years, those visits evolved into a tight-knit friendship and a celebrated annual gathering. In 1999, Osborne and local organizers organized a star-studded 75th birthday celebration for Carter that helped reopen the historic Rylander Theatre in Americus, drawing performers, dignitaries, and visitors from across the globe while raising funds for community and charitable initiatives.

Following the passing of both Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, Osborne initially wondered if the yearly event had reached its conclusion. However, the Plains community urged him to keep the music playing.

“I actually thought that after Jimmy and Rosalynn passed, that we would no longer do this. But I took a poll last year when I was there and everybody said, ‘No, we want to continue,’” Osborne said. “This became more about the people in Sumter County and all the people from around there... that Jimmy wouldn’t want that to end.”

Tonight, Osborne will perform on the church’s Steinway-designed Boston concert grand piano, an instrument he helped secure for the congregation.

He will be joined by a roster of special guest performers:

• Victoria Schultz, longtime harpist for Walt Disney World and film soundtrack musician
• Steve Kader, entertainer and ventriloquist performing alongside his figure, Clyde
• Reed Elliotte, an up-and-coming vocalist discovered locally in Plains

Jason Moon will introduce Osborne during the evening’s program.
