ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) —'Dem Bois’, a local brotherhood and community-focused group, surprised a grandmother from Albany with over $1,000 to support her grandkids Saturday, Aug. 1.

Towana Moore is the mother of Kiambria Young, a 31-year-old mother of 5 who was killed in an Albany shooting in late April.

Following Young’s death, her mother began to look after three of her children.

On Saturday, ‘Dem Bois’ showed up at Moore’s doorstep in east Albany with an unexpected surprise.

“It was a shock, but I appreciate it. I am so grateful,” said Moore. “It takes a village to raise a family.”

Since its founding in 1994, “Dem Bois” have been actively working in the community, supporting those who are less fortunate and going through hard times like Moore.

Tommy Hightower is one of the members and founders of the local group. He said that after running their own races and supporting their families, the group decided it was the time to pour pack into the people of Albany.

“As we continue to progress through our journey, running our race, you know, nourishing our family, we decided that, you know, we was at that age,” said Hightower. “We’re at that time and where it’s time to give back to our community and have impact and have influence. And that’s exactly what it is.”

Everything the group does points back to one purpose- helping people of all ages.

“It kind of fulfills the purpose that you have, you know, to be able to have that same impact on these children. They deserve it,” said Hightower.

For Moore, taking care of her grandkids reminds her a lot of her daughter. Although she isn’t physically here, Moore believes she lives on through her children.

“In a lot of ways, they remind me of her coming up, so I think she’s still here with me,” said Moore. “Not here physically, but through the family. Through her babies.”
