COFFEE COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - Sometimes the brightest lights of the season aren’t the ones glowing in the yard, but the people behind them.
If you drive down Bo Jo Ella Drive in Coffee County, one home stands out. Not because it’s competing for the biggest or best display—but because of the meaning shining through every light.
For homeowner Ernie Rowland, it all began simply.
“I put those three little trees out, and that’s where it all started,” Rowland said. “I didn’t have any thoughts about winning a Christmas contest or being the biggest one in town—just thoughts of joy.”

That joy has grown year after year, transforming the Rowlands’ yard into what neighbors now fondly call Rowlands Toyland. Families from all over stop by, often asking the same question—how do they do it?
“If I count right here, I’ve got about 12 to 13 trees just in this area,” Rowland said.
But for the Rowlands, the display isn’t about numbers or spectacle.
“Throughout the season, we remind ourselves that gifts are nice and decorations are nice,” Rowland said. “But we dedicate it all to the birth of Jesus. Happy birthday, Jesus.”
The work behind the scenes is just as meaningful. Rowland says he spends countless hours outside—sometimes late into the night—putting up lights, maintaining the yard, and perfecting the display.
Over time, the lights have become a reflection of his faith. Scripture signs guide visitors through the yard, starting with John 3:16 and ending with a simple message: Jesus is the way.
“My first sign is ‘God so loved the world,’” Rowland said. “And my last sign is ‘Jesus is the way.’”
For the Rowlands, the lights tell a story—one rooted in faith, love, and a desire to share the true meaning of Christmas with their community.
There may be plenty of lights in the yard, but the Rowlands hope visitors leave remembering something even brighter.
