Description
IRWIN COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) – In an effort to enhance school safety and security, Irwin County Schools will implement a new bookbag policy requiring all students to use clear plastic, vinyl, or mesh book bags starting August 1, 2025.
The policy applies to all grade levels and is designed to support a safer learning environment.
Key Policy Details:
- Bookbag Requirements:
- All bookbags must be made of clear plastic, vinyl, or mesh material.
- Small Personal Items:
- Students are allowed to carry a small, non-transparent pouch (like a pencil case or makeup bag) no larger than 8″ x 5″.
- Standard lunch boxes are also permitted and do not need to be clear or mesh.
- Exceptions:
- Athletic bags, band instrument cases, and medical bags must be approved by school administrators. Students with special medical needs may request accommodations with proper documentation.
- Enforcement:
- Students who arrive with non-compliant bags will have to store them in a designated area and may face disciplinary action:
- First offenses may result in bag confiscation until the end of the day.
- Continued non-compliance could lead to administrative referral and consequences such as In-School Suspension (ISS).
- School officials reserve the right to inspect bookbags at any time for safety reasons. The district encourages parents and students to comply with the new policy, which aims to protect both students and staff.
- Students who arrive with non-compliant bags will have to store them in a designated area and may face disciplinary action:
