MYSTIC, Ga. (WALB) – The Mystic Public Water System has issued a boil water advisory due to a recent depressurization during a valve replacement, according to county officials.

They said this may have caused disruptions in water supply or resulted in very low water pressure in some areas.

The advisory is a precaution to protect the public from potential health hazards related to microbial contamination that could occur when positive pressure in the system is lost, the County Commission said. Customers experiencing water outages or low pressure are advised to use boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking, cooking and food preparation until further notice.

To properly boil water:

• Heat the water until it reaches a rolling boil with bubbles coming quickly from the bottom of the container.
• Continue boiling for one minute.
• Remove from heat and allow to cool before use.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends boiled or bottled water for:

• Drinking
• Brushing teeth
• Washing and preparing food, including baby formula
• Making ice
• Drinking water for pets

The advisory will remain in effect until testing confirms that the water is safe, officials said. According to the commission, customers will be notified immediately when the advisory is lifted. Afterward, residents should flush all faucets for at least two minutes before using water for drinking or cooking.
