WILCOX COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - An inmate is dead and numerous others were injured during a supposed gang-related fight at Wilcox State Prison on Sept. 3, officials with the Georgia Department of Corrections confirm.

The GDC says the fight was in one of the prison’s dorms and was reportedly gang-related. As a result of the fight, seven inmates were taken to hospitals, two of which had to be airlifted due to the severity of their injuries.

Two other inmates with minor injuries were treated at the prison, officials say.

One inmate, Maurice Brown, was pronounced dead as a result of the fight. His body was turned over to the coroner and will be taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab so official cause of death can be determined.

GDC officials say Brown was convicted of kidnapping in Fulton County and was serving a 25-year sentence, with a maximum release date of 2034.

No staff injuries were reported, GDC confirms.

The prison is on lockdown until further notice, GDC says.
