AMERICUS, Ga. (WALB) — A prominent couple in Americus is receiving overwhelming support from the community after life changing health events.

Kenny and Teresa Phillips are longtime members of Americus who have served their community over the years. The couple owns Scoops, a popular ice cream shop downtown.

Before experiencing health problems, Kenny played an active role in his town through the fire department and other service groups.

Now, life for the Phillips looks a lot different after Kenny faced a series of conditions that have now left him disabled and unable to work.

Kenny spent the past few weeks in the ICU before doctors finally figured out what was going on.

He started suffering from nerve damage outside his brain and his spinal cords, which hindered movement of his legs and hands. Unfortunately, it didn’t stop there.

After undergoing gastric bypass surgery, doctors then found that Phillip’s small intestine wasn’t properly absorbing nutrients and vitamins from the food he was eating.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help the Phillips family with expenses as Kenny continues his recovery.
