LEE COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - One Lee County student has died, and a 19-year-old has been arrested after fleeing from deputies on a motorcycle.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO), on Jan. 1 just after 1 a.m. a Lee County Sheriff’s Deputy spotted a motorcycle traveling at an unsafe speed in the 1700 block of Philema Road. The deputy tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver sped up. A pursuit began reaching over 90 miles an hour.
The motorcycle crashed into a trashcan in the 800 block of Forrester Parkway around 1:20 a.m. Both the driver and the passenger were flung off the bike.
The driver later identified as Michael Evans,19, had minor injuries and was arrested shortly after being treated. The passenger and Lee County student, Makenzie Jackson, 18, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Phoebe Putney. She was pronounced dead at the hospital around 8 a.m. by Lee County Deputy Coroner Martavius Marcus.
The incident report states that the two were not wearing helmets at the time of the crash.
According to LCSO, Evans is being held at the Lee County Jail. Chief Deputy Lewis Harris of LCSO told WALB that Evans is also facing a slew of charges from Georgia State Patrol including:
Georgia State Patrol and Lee County Sheriff’s Office are investigating this incident.
