ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas in South Georgia!
Many Georgians want to give back to their communities this holiday season.
If you want to volunteer somewhere, but don’t know where to start, here is a comprehensive list of places places where you can volunteer in South Georgia:
Nationally
- Habitat for Humanity offers volunteering opportunities to build and repair homes for families in need or help out at your local ReStore. Enter your zip code here and see what opportunities are available to you.
- The Salvation Army offers one-time, group volunteering, and ongoing volunteering opportunities. You can click here to find local volunteering opportunities or ring the bell.
- According to the American Red Cross website, the most needed positions are blood donation ambassador, blood transportation specialist, and shelter volunteer. Click here to sign up for one of these positions, or see what else is available this holiday season.
Albany
- Albany Rescue Mission helps house the homeless in Albany and gives them a place to stay. accepts volunteers year-round. Simply stop by the office at 604 N Monroe St., or call (229) 435-7615, and ask how you can help.
- The Albany Humane Society helps homeless, sick, and hungry dogs and cats. Fill out the form on the website to become a volunteer.
- The Dougherty County Public Library has branched all over Albany. They invite the public to volunteer. Anyone under 18 years old who is interested in volunteering must have written permission from a parent or guardian. Click here to learn more.
- The H.E.A.R.T. Organization, Inc. works to improve the lives of people and families in South Georgia who may be “socially and economically challenged,” according to the website. The organization is accepting volunteers for Shoes from the HEART, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. annual breakfast, mentors, and eldercare. Click here to apply.
Americus
- Southwest Georgia Children’s Alliance Inc. (SOWEGA) Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)’s mission is to “recruit, screen, train, and supervise volunteers” to advocate for abused and neglected children in South Georgia. Some of the available volunteer positions include Helpline advocate, translator, and Justice System Court Advocate. To see the full list of requirements for these positions and to apply, click here.
- The Jimmy Carter National Historical Park accepts volunteers for numerous activities including maintaining or rebuilding trails of buildings, conducting research or monitoring wildlife, and teaching others about the park, and swearing in new Junior Rangers. - The Andersonville National Historic Site offers volunteer opportunities in visitor services, cemetery stewardship, research, and more. There are also housing opportunities through RV hook-up spaces and a studio apartment for longer-term volunteers. Moultrie
- First Baptist Church Moultrie has volunteer opportunities open to the public around and outside of the church including working the welcome desk, helping out on the production team, bulletin stuffing, and more. If you are interested in volunteering, reach out to [email protected].
- The YMCA is always open to the public for volunteering. You can volunteer at the Youth Sports Programs teaching kids sports and life skills, teach swim safety through the SPLASH program, and assemble meals to give to students in the after-school program. - According to the website, the National Alliance on Mental Illness Moultrie (NAMI Moultrie) aims to “empower affiliates to create communities where all affected by mental illnesses find hope, help, and acceptance through support, education, and advocacy.” To learn about the volunteer opportunities, fill out the form on the NAMI Moultrie website.
- Colquitt Regional Medical Center is accepting volunteers for the Volunteer Auxilary position or the Youth Volunteer position. Volunteers must pass a criminal background check, a drug screening, a COVID-19 test, tuberculin skin tests, and a health physical. Youth volunteers must be between 14 years old and 18 years old.
Thomasville
- Thomasville Humane Society accepts volunteers year-round. You can choose the types of animals you would like to work with, as well as how you would like to work with them. Click here to apply to volunteer.
- The Thomasville Center for the Art accepts volunteers year-round with different volunteering opportunities available. Slots for volunteering opportunities are limited and can be found here.
- The Thomasville History Center has a list of volunteer opportunities that are updated based on the center’s current needs. To see what is available, click here.

Tifton

- Help local students by volunteering at the Literacy Volunteers of Tifton-Tift County. Tutor students ages 16 and up in GED Prep, English language, literacy, and more. For more information, reach out to [email protected].
- According to the website, the Tiftarea House of Hope is a “non-denominational, faith-based emergency and transitional residence for homeless women.” Volunteers can drive women to and from classes and appointments, lead bible study or activities with the women, help keep up the grounds and more. - Second Harvest of South Georgia has volunteer opportunities in product recovery, in the office, or at the Teachers’ Harvest. To see what is available, click here.

Valdosta
- Serve your community with LAMP in Valdosta by bring or serve lunch or dinner, teach a life skills class, help clients move into their new homes, and more. Click here to fill out the form to be come a volunteer.
- South Georgia Medical Center (SGMC) is accepting volunteers for the Hospital Gift Shop, courtesy cart transport, information and patient registration desk, and more. Volunteers must be 18 years old or older, are required to successfully pass a background check, work at least a four-hour shift for at least six months or longer, and attend a minimum of two Auxiliary general meetings annually. - The Haven is a non-profit organization that provides emergency temporary shelter and services to victims of family violence, sexual violence and human trafficking. Some of the volunteer activities available are helping clients move into new homes, create special holiday incentives for clients in the shelter, and being a Children’s Activity Leader. - Valdosta-Lowndes Parks and Recreation (VLPRA) accepts volunteers to help with coaching several sports including soccer, cheerleading, and baseball; help set up, serve food, or even dance with participants at monthly social for the TR Young Adult Club; and help out with special events like 5Ks, movies, and outdoor events.
