WASHINGTON (7News) — With weeks of WorldPride DC events, the city's Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEMA) agency has been preparing for all the major events to make sure everyone has a good time safely.
“We want folks coming in from all over the world for World Pride this year to enjoy and feel safe and included during this three-week festival,” said Clint Osborn, HSEMA’s director.
From public safety to transportation and health, agencies across the District are working on making sure World Pride events go smoothly.
It is the 50th anniversary of Pride celebrations in D.C. HSEMA will have crews in the field, dealing with road closures, and an online system where people can sign up for alerts.
“We’re always looking at what the impacts of a special event or an incident could be and what we want to do is we want to reduce the impacts on our residents, businesses, and visitors and we do that by working through different scenarios and bringing all of our agencies together to make sure that everybody has the right information and everybody can do their job,” Osborn said.

You can sign up for alerts by texting WorldPrideDC to 888-777. There are already people in town taking part in celebrations, with the pride parade bringing in hundreds of thousands of attendees.
"Think of it like the cherry blossom festival, with people showing up for the blossoms for weeks, bigger crowds during peak bloom, and of course, the parade," Osborn added. "The agency is used to monitoring what’s online and keeping up with weeks-long celebrations."
"We’ll be trying to get the message out through all of our sources, through social media, through media, through the websites when we have traffic changes, because we know that even though this wonderful festival is happening for the next three weeks, we also have a city that’s running in the background,” he said.
It's not just World Pride. There’s the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday celebration, which coincides with President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday, a national security event. After that, there’s the Club World Cup, with people coming from all over the world to watch soccer. Then, the Fourth of July.
