Description

EARLY COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - An artifact stolen in 1974 is finally in the right hands with the Kolomoki Mounds State Park. Investigators say the item was one of at least 120 artifacts stolen in 1974.

The pottery vessel was returned to the parks visitor center without any identification in early May, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GDNR).

GDNR is working with law enforcement and cultural resource partners to investigate the original theft. Angie Johnson, Director of the State Parks and Historic Sites Division said she believes this could be a turning point in the 52-year-old case.

“We are encouraged by the return of this historically significant cultural artifact and hope it inspires others who may have items from Kolomoki to come forward. These artifacts are an irreplaceable part of Georgia’s history and belong to the people and cultures connected to this site,” Johnson said.

“This monumental moment is especially meaningful not only for me, but for the entire community whose dedication and hard work have supported the preservation of this park. The return of this missing pottery vessel restores a part of our shared heritage and ensures it can once again be appreciated in its rightful place.”

The Kolomoki Mounds is the largest and oldest Woodland Indian site in the southeastern United States. Native Americans reportedly inhabited the site from 350 to 900 C.E.

Mound A, located at the park, is the largest woodland-period platform mound in eastern North America.
