LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - A man initially listed as a witness in the shooting of a Valdosta city employee is now facing multiple charges in connection with the April 7 incident, according to jail records, as investigators also identify a second suspect in the case.
Israel Anthonyo Mitchell, 52, turned himself in to authorities on May 4 and faces charges of computer trespass, aggravated assault with intent to rape, murder or rob, possession of a firearm or knife during commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies, and receipt, possession or transfer of firearm by convicted felon or felony first offender.

Jail records show Mitchell had a prior family violence battery charge with the Valdosta Police Department in August 2025.
A second suspect had been identified as Corey Bernard Lewis Martin, 19,. He has been charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm or knife during commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies.

The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 4900 block of White Water Road around 9:46 p.m. on April 7 for a reported shooting.
The victim was identified as 49-year-old Anetra R. Riley of Valdosta, who works as the city’s Neighborhood Development and Community Protection Manager.

When WALB first heard reports of a City of Valdosta employee being shot, we reached out to city officials for a statement but were told they had no comment at the time.
Authorities say additional suspects could be arrested in connection with the case.
The incident was classified as aggravated assault with a gun and is not being investigated as family violence, according to the sheriff’s office.
