Description

HAHIRA, Ga. (WALB) - For the last 12 years, and no matter the weather, a local man with autism makes sure kids in his community make it home safely after school.

Mr. David, as he is affectionately called by the students and community, serves as the crossing guard near Hahira Middle School (HMS).

“It feels real good...800%,” Mr. David said. “I get up about two o’clock after I take me a nap. I sit out a little bit, and the cars start to line up.”

Principal Mitchell Donahoo said like most schools, their focus is on safety, and Mr. David’s presence is an extra layer of protection for students as they leave the campus.

Donahoo said, “I always tell people rain, sleet, snow or shine, [Mr. David is] out here with his umbrella. He’s just here. He’s consistent, and we know that kids need that consistency and our community does, too.”

Ian Weaver a 7th Grade student at HMS said, “He’s great to talk to and everything. It’s cool having him out here every single day, especially when it’s going to be 8th grade, and I’ll be out here. But to know he’s still here helping kids safely cross the road.”

That’s a job that Mr. David is looking forward to every day.

“I am going to do it for 30 years if I can,” Mr. David said.
