ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A South Fulton police officer who died in a head-on collision while on duty has made his final trip home.
Capt. Helio Garcia’s body was flown to Miami earlier this week to be buried. South Fulton police held a ceremony as Garcia’s casket was transferred to the plane at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines assisted with the flight.

“This week, we came together to honor the life, service and legacy of Captain Helio Armando Garcia III as he was flown to Miami for his final burial,” the South Fulton Police Department said. “It was a moment of reverence, reflection and deep gratitude for a hero who gave everything in service to our nation.
“Captain Garcia was a man of honor, strength and dedication. His sacrifice will never be forgotten, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.”

Garcia was a veteran officer and one of the founding members who helped build the South Fulton Police Department.
Authorities said Garcia was on duty and driving a department-issued vehicle on the night of Tuesday, April 15, when a car veered into his lane, striking his patrol car head-on.
He died early the next morning after being rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital with critical injuries.
South Fulton police say the other driver, identified as 31-year-old Santoria McLean of Atlanta, may have been under the influence.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to the South Fulton Police Department Honor Guard for their outstanding professionalism and solemn tribute during the ceremony. Their presence brought dignity and grace to this emotional farewell,” South Fulton police said. “We are also deeply grateful to the Delta Air Lines Honor Guard for their respectful and compassionate handling of Captain Garcia’s journey home. Their commitment to honoring our fallen heroes is truly commendable.”
Garcia leaves behind a wife and three children.
“To the Garcia family – our prayers and deepest sympathies are with you," South Fulton police said. “To Captain Garcia – thank you for your service. Your duty is done. Rest in peace.”
