Description

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A Gwinnett County student was arrested on Friday morning for bringing a loaded semi-automatic gun to school, according to officials.

The unidentified Duluth Middle School student showed the 9mm pistol to other students on the bus, according to Gwinnett County Public Schools Police Chief Tony Lockard. The other children told police what happened, leading to the student’s arrest.

The student is facing criminal charges in juvenile court, police said. School officials have not commented on what those charges are.

The arrest comes 10 days after a deadly shooting at Apalachee High School in Barrow County. Two students and two teachers were killed, while nine others were taken to the hospital, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Colt Gray, a 14-year-old student at the school, was arrested and charged with four counts of felony murder. His father, 54-year-old Colin Gray, was also charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder and eight counts of cruelty to children. Investigators believe he gave his son access to the assault-style rifle used in the shooting.

In the days after the shooting, dozens of threats rang out against schools all across the state. Lockard said in Gwinnett County alone, 16 people have been arrested for threatening violence at school. One of those arrests was late Thursday night when a student threatened a district high school on social media, according to police.

Gwinnett County Public Schools spokesperson Bernard Watson said officers have investigated almost 400 tips of school threats since the shooting. He added that Gwinnett County schools don’t currently have metal detectors, but officials are considering their installation.

Watson urged parents to check their students’ bags, monitor their social media activity and lock up any weapons.

“We want to continue to make sure our schools are safe learning environments for everyone,” he said.
