Newsom said in a post on X that President Donald Trump lacks the authority to "unilaterally impose the largest tax hike of our lifetime with destructive tariffs."
President Trump’s unlawful tariffs are wreaking chaos on California families, businesses, and our economy -- driving up prices and threatening jobs, Newsom said in a news release.
The lawsuit, set to be filed in federal court, argues that the tariffs are causing immediate and irreparable harm to California, which boasts the largest economy, manufacturing, and agriculture sectors in the nation.
According to CNN, California engaged in nearly $675 billion in two-way trade last year.
The state's top three trade partners—Mexico, Canada, and China—are all facing heightened tariffs under the Trump administration.
FOX26 will be livestreaming a presser from Newsome to talk about the lawsuit at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.
