Description

Maine Governor Janet Mills is responding to a Trump official who called her a “petulant child.” Congresswoman Chellie Pingree wants him to resign.

According to the Washington Post, the acting commissioner of the Social Security Administration called Governor Mills "petulant child.”

Leland Dudek made the comments in an email exchange on his order to end a contract that allows parents of newborn babies in Maine to sign up their children for a Social Security number at the hospital. Instead, they'd have to do so in person at an office, which is a major inconvenience for parents, especially in rural Maine.

Dudek told the New York Time he quickly reversed the decision along with another to end electronic death reporting in the state, saying:

"I was ticked at the governor of Maine for not being real cordial to the president. I screwed up I'll admit I screwed up."

Dudek retaliated against Maine when Governor Mills challenged President Donald Trump.

Last month at the White House, Governor Mills said to President Trump "we'll follow the law" and "see you in court" when he appeared to unlawfully threaten to withhold all federal funding to Maine, if she didn’t comply with his executive order banning transgender athletes in girls' sports.

Governor Mills responded to Dudek reportedly calling her names, saying:

"This is the same guy that admitted that he suspended Maine’s enumeration at birth and funeral directors’ program. First, he said it was a mistake, said it was inadvertent, then, God bless, Sen. King and Sen. Collins got after him and then he admitted he did it on purpose because the governor of Maine was not 'sufficiently cordial to the president and I said, ‘I can't speak to that.’"

Congresswoman Pingree is asking Dudek to resign, writing his "own internal emails reveal not merely incompetence but calculated malice. A federal official explicitly ordering the sabotage of essential services to punish a state for daring to uphold its own democratically enacted laws."
