Description
LEE COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) – Authorities are investigating the death of a 7-month-old child after the infant was found unresponsive in a vehicle Thursday, Oct. 16.
According to Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler, Deputy Coroner Rosalie Clements was called to the Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital after child was discovered unresponsive after being left inside a vehicle. The infant later died at the hospital according to Lee County Sheriff’s Office Captain Eddie Burgess.
Burgess said deputies were called to Phoebe after the child had been brought in from a business on Ledo Road.
Lee County Coroner Hill Mackey later confirmed that the child was brought from the Kia dealership, where the child’s mother was employed.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office was notified by the Albany Police Department once the child arrived at the hospital.
Mackey confirmed the child’s death and said the body was sent for an autopsy on Friday, Oct. 17. The cause of death remains pending.
Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler says death investigations involving children can take a long time.
“People get upset because they think after the autopsy you should have an answer, if there is not any trauma to the child or injuries to the child, then a lot of time, you got to wait on tox and the histology, all of that, to come in and see what happened,” Fowler said.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) confirmed they were called in to assist with the death investigation. The case still remains under investigation.
WALB has reached out to Phoebe Health System for a statement but has not yet received a response.
