ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Georgians are paying 56 cents less per gallon compared to the rest of the country as Memorial Day weekend approaches.
With more than 39 million people planning to travel by car this weekend, according to AAA, the price difference could mean significant savings for drivers.
The national average for regular gas is $4.56 a gallon. In Georgia, the average is $4 a gallon after Gov. Brian Kemp extended the state’s gas tax suspension.

Despite the lower prices, some drivers say the relief is minimal.
“The prices just haven’t budged lately. If anything, they’re just slowly creeping up and up,” said Adam Nolan, a driver. “I remember when the gas tax got stopped before, it wasn’t that big of a deal. So, when I hear that, it’s only a temporary fix.”
Since the conflict with Iran began, gas prices have been up more than 50%. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted global energy markets, pushing up the cost of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel.
The pain at the pump is changing how Georgians drive. A new AAA survey finds more than two in five Georgians are letting their tanks run close to empty before filling up.
“I’m the type of person to wait till the last possible minute to fill up my tank,” said Jill Reale, a driver. “My husband yells at me all the time. He’s like, ‘Why are you waiting? You’re supposed to fill it up at half tank.’ No, I wait till the last possible. I’ve run out of gas before, it’s not a big deal.”
Experts warn that habit can backfire. Repeatedly running on fumes can damage a fuel pump, potentially costing hundreds in repairs. AAA says drivers should refill before their tank drops below a quarter full.
Drivers looking to save more can shop around for the best prices. Loyalty points and member discounts at gas stations attached to grocery stores stack on top of Georgia’s already lower prices.
