WASHINGTON, D.C. (CBS12) — Flags across the United States and at U.S. facilities worldwide will be flown at half-staff to honor the memory of His Holiness Pope Francis, following a proclamation issued by President Donald Trump on Monday.
Pope Francis was the first Latin American pontiff. After suffering from a chronic lung disease and having part of one lung removed as a young man, he was admitted to Gemelli hospital on Feb. 14, 2025, for a respiratory crisis that developed into double pneumonia.
The day after Easter Sunday, on April 21, the Vatican announced Pope Francis' passing. He had died at age 88.

The directive also extends to all U.S. embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including military facilities and naval vessels and stations, according to the news release.
