HAMPTON, Va. (WWBT/Gray News) - The pilot of an experimental plane that crashed at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia, has died.

The Federal Aviation Administration said an MX Aircraft MXS, a single-seat aerobatic aircraft often used in air shows, crashed at around 11:50 a.m. while attempting to land at the base on Thursday.

Langley Air Force Base is located in Hampton near the NASA Langley Research Center. Air Force officials say that the plane involved was not a military aircraft.

The military did not publicly name the pilot, but he was identified online as Rob Holland.

Holland is a respected and well-known stunt pilot who was set to perform at Langley’s annual Air Power Over Hampton Roads air show this weekend.

A statement on Rob Holland Aerosports’ social media page described him as “the most humble person with a singular goal to simply be better than he was yesterday.”

“Today we lost a friend of our Air Force family,” Joint Base Langley-Eustis commander Col. Matthew Altman said.

An NTSB report should be available within 30 days. A probable cause of the crash, along with other factors, will be detailed in a final report in 12 to 24 months.
