WASHINGTON (TNND) — Elon Musk has intensified his criticism of government-funded non-governmental organizations (NGOs), labeling them as potential sources of fraud.
On Thursday, Musk took to X to express his concerns, stating, "Government-funded NGOs (a contradiction in terms) are probably the biggest source of fraud."
Musk's scrutiny of NGOs is not new. Earlier this month, he told Fox News, "I think there needs to be a number of arrests in that regard as well because these are fake charities. It's a giant money laundering scheme."
In a February interview with Joe Rogan, Musk reiterated his stance, saying, "The whole NGO thing is a nightmare. It’s a misnomer because if you have a government-funded nongovernmental organization, you’re simply a government-funded organization."
On Feb. 6, the Trump Administration released a memo ordering a review of all NGO funding. The memo stated the goal was "to stop funding NGOs that undermine the national interest," highlighting concerns that some NGOs might be engaged in activities that compromise the security and prosperity of the American people.
Diane Yentel, president and CEO of the National Council for Nonprofits, finds the vilification of nonprofits highly concerning.
The truth about nonprofits is that the vast majority of them are small, are doing incredibly good, important work with limited funds, are created by communities to meet community needs. We should be shoring up that important work, not trying to tear it down," Yentel said.
This week, the GOP-led House Committee on Homeland Security launched an investigation into the potential misuse of federal funds by NGOs to facilitate illegal migration.
The investigation follows the emergence of a video allegedly showing the Chinese American Planning Council advising migrants on how to evade Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
