WASHINGTON (TNND) — Billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk has been granted access to the U.S. Treasury Department's sensitive payment system, raising concerns over potential conflicts of interest and the politicization of government payments.
Musk, through his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) agency, has been allowed to examine the system, that processes payments approved by Congress.
In a post on X over the weekend, Musk wrote "The @DOGE team discovered, among other things, that payment approval officers at Treasury were instructed always to approve payments, even to known fraudulent or terrorist groups. They literally never denied a payment in their entire career. Not even once."
President Donald Trump was asked about Musk's involvement while fielding questions from the Oval Office on Monday. Trump expressed support for Musk's involvement.
He’s got access only to letting people go that he thinks are no good if we agree with him. And that’s only if we agree with him. He’s a very talented guy from the standpoint of management and costs," said President Trump.
New Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reportedly approved the decision to grant Musk access. It came after a former top Treasury official and Musk clashed over access to the payment system. The Washington Post reported that Acting Deputy Treasury Secretary David Lebryk left after more than 30 years with the department. He had reportedly refused to give Musk and DOGE the ability to access the system.
There's concern about the potential misuse of the system, which contains the personal information of millions of Americans. The Treasury essentially cuts the checks for spending that's already been approved by Congress. The Department does not act as a decider over the trillions of dollars in government spending. Politicizing the payment system, or trying to cut off payments to things Musk or DOGE don't agree with, would be a potential crisis, according to critics. There's also a potential conflict of interest according to some Democrats.
"Elon Musk, who himself receives billions of dollars in Government contracts, now seizing control over the payment systems to government contractors including himself, including potential rivals, including potential friends. What could go wrong, right," said Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., to MSNBC over the weekend.
Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Oree., the top Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, sent a letter to Bessent warning, "These payment systems simply cannot fail, and any politically-motivated meddling in them risks severe damage to our country and the economy."
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., also pledged that his party would draft legislation to prevent "unlawful access" to the Treasury's payment system.
What Musk and his team don't have, at least for now, is the ability to operate or make changes to the payments. Any change would likely face a challenge in court.
