Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - The only halfway house for women in Dougherty County is expected to open before summer. On Monday morning, county leaders approved a property on Cordele Road to be named Motif.
Getting everyone on board for a women’s sober house in a Dougherty County neighborhood wasn’t easy. Some neighbors feared the facility would hurt home values, or that residents might cause problems.
“We researched with other programs, and there have never been any threats or dangers to the people who live there. There was also no threat to the value of their property going down,” said Lorenzo Heard, Commission Chairman.
The organization’s founders tell WALB that Motif’s goal is to help integrate women who are recovering from addiction back into society.
“There are a lot of people who fall through the cracks and with just a little help, they could have recovered and gotten back to their families, and we didn’t want to hinder that process,” continued Heard.
The women who would stay at Motif are recovering addicts who have spent at least 30 days at a rehab facility. Once at the sober house, the women are required to have a full-time job, contribute to house chores, and attend meetings. During their downtime, the women will get involved with the church and help with other community events.
“We want to make sure that the girls coming to us have some sort of foundation, some kind of background in recovery. And just making sure that this is something they really want to do and that they are committed to their sobriety,” said Mo Taylor, one of Motif’s founders.
The founders say they’re excited about this project and look forward to helping women in South Georgia.
“To have a place for these women to go where there is hope and there is a life that can be built after the destruction of addiction, this is just huge,” continued Taylor.
Motif’s founders, Tiffany Cox and Mo Taylor, tell WALB that they expect the sober house to be up and running by April. In the coming weeks, they will be looking for volunteers and donors to help with the move.
