WASHINGTON (TNND) — Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is reportedly setting its sights on the Internal Revenue Service as part of its ongoing review of federal agencies. President Donald Trump said earlier this week that he did not anticipate the IRS being dismantled like other DOGE targets.
"The Internal Revenue Service will be looked at like everyone else. Just about everybody is going to be looked at," Trump said. "They’re doing a hell of a job, it’s an amazing job they’re doing. That force is building, I call it a force of super-geniuses."
As DOGE continues its efforts to downsize government, so do the efforts to slow it down in the courts. 14 Democratic attorneys general have filed a lawsuit arguing that Musk and DOGE's seemingly unchecked power is unconstitutional.
"Now it seems we have the most powerful unelected bureaucrat in the history of the world, who also happens to be the richest person in the world, acting as co-president," said Attorney General Raul Torrez, D-N.M. "It violates the rule of law and it violates the constitution."

Amid various legal challenges, Musk's team is expected to address the Pentagon soon, a move welcomed by new Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
"I hope to welcome Elon to the Pentagon very soon and his team working in collaboration with us," Hegseth said. "There are waste redundancies and headcounts and headquarters that need to be addressed. There's just no doubt."
The DOGE mission has been embraced by multiple agencies, amplified by the Trump administration and multiple executive orders expanding the scope of DOGE's work. New leadership at the Environmental Protection Agency is focused on reclaiming funds distributed by the Biden administration before January.
"I canceled a $50 million dollar grant to an organization called the Climate Justice Alliance," said Lee Zeldin, EPA Administrator. "They say that climate justice runs through a Free Palestine. I think the American taxpayer wouldn’t want $50 million going to this left-wing advocacy group. It’s canceled."
Meanwhile, a judge ordered the Trump administration to lift a DOGE-led funding freeze on the U.S. Agency for International Development, which had been dismantled in an effort to curb what was deemed government waste. USAID funds and projects were frozen and staff were being told they were going on administrative leave. Republicans have been highlighting various outgoing payments from DOGE that they deem improper. The judge's order gives the Trump administration a five-day deadline to comply with releasing the funds again.
