WASHINGTON (TNND) — The Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency is moving fast to slash spending across the federal government.

In just two days, DOGE says it has canceled 239 "wasteful" contacts, with the agency's X account showing taxpayers what their money is going toward.

DOGE said the contracts have a "ceiling value" of $1.7 billion with a total savings projection of around $400 million.

This includes an $8.5 million consulting contract for "fiscal stewardship to improve management and program operations in order to drive innovation and improve efficiency and effectiveness of business services; rethink, realign and reskill the workforce; and enhance program delivery through a number of transformational initiatives."

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins shared Wednesday that she canceled a $379,000 Department of Agriculture grant in the San Francisco Bay Area to "educate queer, trans and BIPOC urban farmers and consumers about food justice and values-aligned markets."

Also this week, DOGE shared several canceled grants within the National Institutes of Health related to sexual identity:

  • $620,000 for "an LGB+ inclusive teen pregnancy prevention program for transgender boys"
  • $699,000 for studying "cannabis use" among "sexual minority gender diverse individuals"
  • $740,000 for examining "social networks" among "black and Latino sexual minority men in New Jersey"
  • $50,000 for assessing "sexual health" among "LGTBQ+ Latinx youth in an agricultural community"
  • $75,000 for researching "structural racism"

One Thursday, DOGE's X account shared more examples of NIH canceled grants including $100,000 for Vanderbilt University to study "social networks" among "sexual and gender minorities" and $37,000 for the University of Houston to study "fear of deportation" in "Latinx young adults."

Other canceled grants include:

  • $681,000 for the University of Pennsylvania to study "social media anti-vaping messages" among "sexual and gender minority teens"
  • $225,000 for the University of Colorado to study the "effects of hormones on headaches in transmasculine adolescents"
